Dorothy Steelman

I graduated from St Mary’s University 1985 with a BA in Computer Science & Applied Statistics and obtained my MLS from TWU in 2009.

Before finding myself the director of the Lakehills Area Library, I lived overseas with my military husband.  We lived in Wiesbaden, Germany and Harrogate, England.

If you are doing the math you will see there is a long gap between my BA and MLS.  That’s because I never saw myself as a librarian.  I always tell people the job found me not the other way around and I did not know enough about the job to be scared of it.  I just jumped in with both feet and started running a small rural nonprofit library, with the help of some very dedicated volunteers, that was only a few years old.  The library was a small 600 square foot trailer that was getting ready to move into a 6,000 sq. foot building.  Financing for the building was done entirely by grants and donations.  During the 12 years I was the director, we automated the library, gave free computer classes as well as GED classes, had a very successful children’s summer reading program; started a Genealogy group and book club.

For the last 4 years I have been the Library Director for the City of Pleasanton Texas.  Programming for the Library has grown for children, Adults and Teens.  The City has also started planning for a library expansion in the next 5 years so that we can offer more programming to include computer and life skill classes.
